Jesse Stone Movies In Order

Jesse Stone is a fictional detective in a series of books and movies which was originally written by Robert B. Parker.  Parker originally started the book series in 1997 with “Night Passage” and was able to complete the saga before his death in 2010 with “Split Image”.  The story encompasses nine novels, which were later picked up by CBS and turned into eight separate films.  The story follows Jesse Stone who is an alcoholic divorcee who was forced to resign from the LAPD.  He was able to obtain a job as police chief in a small town which was known for its corruption and crime.  He was hired because the president who he later arrested thought he could be easily manipulated.

Unlike most stories, it’s not that important to watch the Jesse Stone movies in order.  Each book and movie is its own separate story, with its own plot development.  There are common characters in each movie which do develop over the entire series.  However, there’s no important information in the earlier movies that acts as a prerequisite for the later films.  I personally would still recommend them to be watched in chronological order simply because Jesse Stone as a character will develop over time, and you will grow familiar with his antics.

Many movies that were originally based off of novels follow the same order.  However, the Jesse Stone series is in a totally separate order than the books, and there are even some new additions.  In fact, the written series starts with a completely different story than the film does.  This is one of the reasons why watching them in a specific order isn’t really that important.

CBS last aired “Benefit of the Doubt” which was the last in the series in 2012 which garnered an impressive 13 million viewers.  However, unfortunately there are no plans to produce subsequent movies because it attracted viewers of the wrong demographic.  They also stated that it was an expensive series to produce, and that they were going to produce shorter TV films in the future as opposed to 90 minute movies.

If you’re a fan of the Jesse Stone books, I highly recommend watching the movies.  In fact, I’d say this is one of the rare cases where the book does not really add anything to the overall story.  They’re both equally well written and produced, so it’s all about how you prefer to consume the story at hand.

I just finished reading “Colorblind” by Robert B Parker ( from his estate) I believe it’s the last book in the Jesse Stone series(2018) It is written byReed Farrel Coleman. I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope it can be made into a movie.

I find it odd that the people who are buying the DVDs and books are considered to be the wrong demographic. Maybe putting this on TV is what is killing it. Put Number 10 in the theater and then drive DVD sales to the people who already own 1 – 9. Seems like they are missing a market because they are measuring wrong.

I have watched all the movies at least three times; just took the entire set from the library watching them in sequence this time. They didn’t have Stone Cold so I rented it on line. It was my weekend thing. I agree that this is a remarkable series. I belong to the baby boomer group and appreciate that their were no bed scenes and no swearing. How great is that! Just heard that Hallmark has requested another Jessie Stone movie be made… Hooray!!

I think they should finish the rest of the story. Is it really that important who is watching these movies, 13 million viewers is quite an amazing number. I know you can not put people in groups, you would be surprised how wrong you could be. It’s been 3 years now we are ready for a new movie. So do your thing please.

I remember seeing a few of these when they were televised, but missed many of them. We were glad to find them on Amazon and have watched all but the last two. I would love to see the series continued if the family/estate of Robert B. Parker would find a writer that they felt would write stories that would carry on his legacy. My wife and I too don’t understand the networks focus on the 19-49 demographics? Especially when there is a huge demographic called the “Boomers” or “Baby Boomers”! Maybe it’s time the networks open their eyes to reality?

Soon after retiring I let my wife talk me into buying some new books. Wanted some light reading so I purchased all the Robert Parker novels. As soon as I finished the last Jessee Stone book I sought out the first movie. A few days after watching that I started looking for the rest of the movies. Have now watched all nine 3 times. Why?
Characters are believable and not treated as an afterthought; the interpersonal stories rise above the presentations of the common theatrical crime – but not so much so that solving the crime has no importance.
Talk of these presentations appealing to the wrong demographic just might be in error. I have purchased all the books and all the movies. From reading other reviews it seems this is somewhat common. Maybe the only thing wrong with the Stone movies is that they are being marketed to the wrong demographic.

Loved the series. Having the movies released once or twice a year makes viewers wanting more. Tom Selleck is very good in this series. They seem to have chosen really good actors to work with Mr. Selleck. His character seems to slowly be evolving and moving away from the ex-wife. We love William DeVane’s character, good choice on that one.. I was sorry to hear that Robert Parker passed away. A tremendous loss. I hope that someone will continue making the movies. with the same creativity. Looking forward to seeing Mr Selleck soon in the role of Jesse Stone..

This is a great series, truly enjoyable; we’ve watched all that are available on film, plan to buy them, and hope (HOPE!) for more, since other authors have taken over the writing. I’ll read the books too, though Parker himself, before he died, said he ‘found the Jesse Stone movies the most accurate television adaptations of his novels’ and on his blog wrote “Tom nails the character” [Wikipedia article]. … We totally agree; Selleck does a wonderful, very impressive job as Stone, and although he’s got his personal issues, they don’t make him an unlikeable character as many old cop/PI book/TV series did with their heroes. I guess I’d say it’s “real,” he really seems like someone you could meet on the street and like as a person, very believable, and not phony at all. PLEASE make more movies!

In real life, the dog who played Reggie passed away before Lost in Paradise was filmed. Instead of keeping ‘Reggie’ alive with a look-alike substitute, Selleck and Reggie’s actual owner decided it was appropriate for this storyline to follow the natural progression of a dog’s life span.
The owner of Jesse’s latest sidekick, Steve (Ned), is the same person that owned Reggie (Joe).

Its sad that CBS played economics/politics with this series, the viewer, as usual, gets shafted, as well as Tom! With six more potential scripts from the Writer to play with, it shouldn’t be too hard to finally see the results…that’s up to the current contract owner AND Tom!

I like all the movies in this series..Tom Selleck captures the essence of his role and just plays it very well..add to that the supporting cast and you have a good movie(s)…shame they can’t do more but I guess it’s hard to find time around crappy reality TV shows..

They should have done them all and in proper order = they are always trying to get “us” the viewer hooked on “THEIR NETWORK” well they sure missed a golden chance. We want more = all of Jessie Stone we can get

Love the series and loath CBS for not producing quality movies for my demographic. Apparently late 30’s early 40’s is not the demographic that they want. People with the means to purchase from advertisers doesn’t fit the bill. More useless reality shows instead?

Same reason that Longmire was killed on A&E. Funny how we don’t watch either channel now. Maybe Netflix can pick up Jesse Stone as well so we can watch both our favorites.

I agree with you, Wild D. I am nite sure what demographic they’re looking for, I’m 60. I watched and loved Vegas with Dennis Quaid, cancelled; Watched and loved a western series with Tom Berringer as a sheriff who worked with with a primitive forensic officer during the 1880s, cancelled; Longmire, cancelled; so I quit watching TV except for Blue Bloods. I live the Jesse Stone series

Its funny you should mention Longmire. After I binge watched several Jesse Stone shows, I thought of Longmire and of how CBS canceled Longmire in favor of The Walking Dead! I could not stop watching Jesse Stone shows (love Tom Selleck). I guess movies without lots of special effects and loud music and with just great acting don’t appeal to the Zombie demographic. I hope to see more of Jesse Stone shows and maybe they’ll bring back Longmire some day. More of these, please`

Man, I just found this chat board about Jessy Stone & I was thinking that I guess 50 isn’t the right demographic either. I also noticed y’all mentioned Longtime, another favorite of mine. They just keep producing the stupid Shit people with half a brain can watch in the time it takes them to pop in a TV dinner. God forbid they spend some money and put some quality stuff on TV. It’s going to be a lifetime of the Bachelor or the Simpsons for all of them. Not me, no thanks….

These movies are FANTASTIC! The story line is very good and the acting excellent. I hope Benefit of the Doubt is not the last movie in this series!

The movie series are the best! I wish there was one made for TV every year. A weekly series based on the character would take away the credibility of Jesse Stone like many weak weekly TV detective series.
It would have to be Selleck, he’s the best!

I love them.. I have all 9 & periodically rewatch them in order. Just finished them again today.. Hoping that Hallmark movies and mysteries continue the series.. they have a variety of good watchable TV with the Stars of our childhood all grown up.. also worth the watch. I am part of the demographic and hate it when they make those decisions.

What did you think of the series?
