Rocky Movies In Order

The Rocky movie series is probably one of the most recognizable sports themed series there is. Featuring the famous Rocky Balboa, it shows one man’s conviction to be the top boxer in the world. The original Rocky which was filmed in 1976 is most noted for the scene that’s simply referred to as “The Steps”. It starts with Rocky on a jog around the neighborhood. More and more people start to jog along as the song “Gonna fly now” by Bill Conti plays in the background. Eventually he makes his way up the steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art to be surrounded and cheered by the crowd. The rest as they say is history.

Over the last 30 years, the Rocky franchise has continued to inspire its viewers. Since the first movie in 1976 to the last in 2006, dedicated fans of all generations have been enjoying his story. The six films have generated their makers a combined total of over one billion dollars, the most successful of them being Rocky IV. If you’re wondering if you should watch the Rocky movies in order, you probably don’t have to. I would absolutely recommend watching the first one no matter what. However, after you view the first one, you can safely watch whichever you want after that. For example, you can easily enjoy the third film in the series without having watched the second.

Many movie fans are unaware that the Rocky story was based on real people. Stallone had many influences as he wrote the movies, many of them from real boxers. Joe Frazier, Joey Giardello, and Rocky Marciano are all real life boxers that Stallone based his story off of. Many of them fit the story very closely. They grew up poor, suffered hard ships, trained hard, and worked their way to the top.  While not based solely on one of these boxers, it’s clear that Stallone drew a lot of influence from them.

Perhaps because of Sylvester Stallone’s age, or maybe to avoid beating a dead horse, it appears the glory days of Rocky have passed. However, that doesn’t mean your favorite movie character is gone, his story may still live on into the future. With permission of the current rights holder, a spinoff of Rocky is in the works. The spinoff will feature Rocky as a trainer and coach of an up and coming boxing super star. Filming will start early in 2015, and will feature Michael B. Jordan as the main character. Whatever happens with that film, it’s already clear that Rocky has cemented his place in movie history. His story has inspired fans, movie makers, and actors around the world and his name will live for generations to come.
