Game of Thrones Movies In Order
A Song of Ice and Fire is the original title of the book series behind the hit HBO show Game of Thrones. It closely follows three separate, but related plot lines which eventually all come together in the final stages of the book series. The first is the gathering of the creatures in the north, the second is the rise to power of Daenerys Targaryen who’s the rightful heir of the throne, and the third is the power struggle between the seven kingdoms. In all there are a total of seven planned books, five of which have been published already. HBO adapted the books into Game of Thrones, which aired eight seasons and ended in 2019.
It’s very important that you read the Game of Thrones books in order. Each book tells a little more of the saga and you need to read them in the order of their release date to understand what’s going on. Over the entire series of books, there is a ton of important character and plot development, which makes chronological order a necessity.
| Book Order | TV Series |
|---|---|
| A Game of Thrones (1996) | Season 1 (2011) |
| A Clash of Kings (1999) | Season 2 (2012) |
| A Storm of Swords (2000) | Season 3 (2013) |
| A Feast for Crows (2005) | Season 4 (2014) |
| A Dance with Dragons (2011) | Season 5 (2015) |
| The Winds of Winter (TBA) | Seasons 6–8 (2016, 2017, 2019) |
| A Dream of Spring (TBA) |
HBO is well known for their quality programming which has brought us The Sopranos and The Wire. However, Game of Thrones became one of the network’s most successful series. The original show has ended, but the world continues in prequel shows such as House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
The book series is still unfinished. The sixth book, The Winds of Winter, has not been published and does not have a release date. A Dream of Spring is planned as the seventh and final book. The HBO show has its own ending, which differs from the books that have yet to be released.
Interestingly enough, Martin who often reads online message boards gets a kick out of people predicting the ending of the Game of Thrones book series. He even went so far as to say that he’s read accurate descriptions of fan’s endings which closely match what he’s actually going to write. Who knows, maybe he’s even using these message boards to get ideas for himself!
Either way, as it stands now, A Song of Ice and Fire is one of the most epic TV and book sagas out there. It rivals Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, and the book series still has its final two novels ahead. Hopefully you read the books in the correct order so you can fully grasp just how awesome this novel really is.

Have not seen the TV version of the Game of Thrones but am reading the first A Game of Thrones and thoroughly enjoy it. It is impossible to put it aside and the 834 pages are flying by. Just wish they were available for my Nook at a cheaper cost.
