Insidious Movies In Order

If you’re a fan of horror movies, the Insidious movie series should definitely be on your “must see” list this year.  Since 2011 this franchise has seen three successful releases with the fourth and possibly final film scheduled to be released in January 2018.

Many horror movies have fairly cliché plot lines.  We’ve all seen movies like Friday the 13th with serial killers who chase their victims by slowly walking towards them.  The ever-curious good looking blonde woman who suddenly has the urge to check out that mysterious noise that goes bump in the night instead of running the other direction.  The Insidious movies are different in that they have interesting plot lines while still remaining scary, unpredictable, and highly suspenseful.

The films tell the story of the Lambert family whose child Dalton inexplicably falls into what they think is a coma.  However, upon consulting experts the family learns that he can traverse into spiritual worlds, but has become trapped in “The Further”, a purgatory like environment.  During this time, evil spirits seize the opportunity to take advantage of his body’s coma like state to control his physical body and exit The Further.  However, expert ghost hunter Elise has spent her life in and out of The Further and assists Dalton in fighting the spirits and reclaiming his physical body.

If you’re just starting out on these films, I would watch the Insidious movies in order by their release date.  The chronological order would be the third movie first which is a prequel to the first two films in this series.  However, I don’t think watching them in chronological order would really add to the viewing experience.  Watching these movies in the order they were released provides a sufficiently enjoyable experience.

The success of the Insidious movies is overwhelming compared to other series in the horror genre.  As an example, the Friday the 13th movies earned a world-wide box office total of $464 million over the course of a whopping 12 movies.  However, the Insidious series has already earned its makers $371 million in just three short movies.  Additionally, other popular franchises like Chucky have earned $289 million over five movies and the Halloween series over 10 movies has only earned $396 million.

Despite the obvious financial success, the movies were never really highly rated by critics or even fans.  Critics on Rotten Tomatoes rated the first three films a 66%, 39%, and 58% respectably.  Fan ratings didn’t come in much better with opinions at 6%, 57%, and 52%.  However, despite the seemingly mediocre reviews, the hard numbers at the box office and the new movie scheduled for 2018 speak for itself: the Insidious movie series is here to stay!
