The Bourne movie series is probably one of my favorite spy series of all time. Every film in this five-film series will keep you on the edge of your seat wanting more. Known for its realism, Bourne does not use over the top CGI like James Bond or other spy movies which tend to be a bit over the top. This strategy has proven effective over the last two decades, with the films earning more than a billion dollars at the box office. A sixth Bourne movie is now in development, but it does not have a release date yet. The books have also continued beyond Robert Ludlum’s original trilogy.

Like most popular series, you definitely need to watch the Bourne movies in order. The Bourne Identity fills you in on crucial background information that is needed for the sequels. Sorry, there’s no way around it, it’s all or nothing. The above list goes in chronological order, by release date. Jason Bourne (2016) is the latest released film.

Bourne is no different from other popular movie series in the fact that it originated from a book. In fact, it seems most good things come originally from books. The original trilogy was written by Robert Ludlum, but the series has since been taken over by Eric Van Lustbader, who wrote nine continuation novels. The Bourne Legacy (2012) stars Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, a new agent in the same world as Jason Bourne. The original Bourne Identity has a 7.9 on IMDB and an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. On the contrary, the latest released movie, Jason Bourne, has a 6.6 and a 55% respectively. However, such declines are expected as a series ages and this isn’t really uncommon.

Jason Bourne has worked his way into popular culture over the last few decades. In fact, there have been books, movies, TV shows, and video games based off this popular character. In 2008 The Bourne Conspiracy was released for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The character also made a brief television appearance in 1988 on ABC. It was a direct to TV movie series and was based off of the original 1980 book.

If you’re a fan of the spy genre, the Bourne series is an absolute must watch. This highly realistic thriller has been exceeding fan’s expectations for over two decades. With a growing box office income, and dedicated fan base, this action packed flick is here to stay. Just remember, these films are not meant to be watched as standalones, they’re meant to be seen in the order in which they were released.
