King Kong Movies In Order
King Kong is a classic monster movie that has been winning over hearts and minds for decades. The original movie which was released in 1933 spurred a cultural icon which is still thriving nearly a century later. The Kong monster has been the center of many books, TV shows, movies, video games, and more. As time goes on, this historic monster only seems to get more and more popular with the last movie King Kong being released in 2005 earning the spot as one of the most successful movies of the year. Because of the continued success, there are currently two more Kong movies on the horizon, Skull Island slated for March 10th, 2017, and Godzilla vs. King Kong which has a release date for some time in 2020.
Since the beginning, the Kong movie series has been wildly successful. The original film in 1933 earned about $2 million in rental fees, which translated into today’s dollars is about $37 million – a modest hit for the time. In modern times, the 2005 release earned a box office world-wide total of over a half billion dollars, which puts it in the top five most successful movies of the year. Critics agree with enthusiast excitement as Roger Ebert gave it a 5/5 and Rotten Tomatoes gave it an 84%. With increased CGI and the addition of Godzilla, I can only expect 2017’s latest release in the series will be the best yet!
You probably do not need to watch the Kong movies in order to fully enjoy them. Most of them are independent of each other and do not follow a specific plot line from movie to movie. However, the 1986 King Kong Lives is part two of the Kong movie which was released in 1976. The upcoming Skull Island movie which is slated to be released March 10th, 2017 is part of a bigger Godzilla movie trilogy, the first of which was released in 2014 and will have subsequent releases in 2019 and 2020. However, as far as the Kong series goes, you can watch them in any order you please, they do not follow a consecutive story line.

Since the inception of Kong in the early 1930s, he has been seen in many facets of popular culture all over the world. Prior to the movie, there was a book written and released in 1932 which was part of the advertising campaign for the original movie. The book featured a similar plot line as the film did, and served as a nice introduction to the character to early fans. The Kong character has been the subject of three separate TV series over many decades, multiple video games, and the centerpiece of a variety of songs including one from The Kinks and another from Frank Zappa.
The Kong character and other giant monsters like Godzilla are iconic American classics that are sure to live on throughout movie making history. With future movies currently slated through 2020, it’s hard to imagine a world where this gentle giant is not loved and adored by all. Whether you’re a fan of the classic black and white films or enjoy the latest that Hollywood CGI has to offer, King Kong has cemented its place in movie history.
