Planet of the Apes Movies In Order

The Planet of the Apes has been awing generations for nearly 50 years now.  This shocking film reverses the dominate roll that humans currently play on planet earth, giving all of the power to our primate cousins.  Many people remember the final scene in the 1968 movie where George Taylor looks on at a buried statue of liberty and realizes that civilization is doomed.  Ever since that dramatic ending, this famous series has been kicking out successful movies ever since.  Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is no exception grossing over 500 million dollars in 2014.  In fact, due to its success, there’s a new movie in this rebooted series slated for 2016 which currently does not have a name.

Like most series, you should watch The Planet of the Apes movies in order that they were released.  You have two options with this because the series was rebooted in 2011.  You can start either with the 1968 version, or you can start with the 21st century films version which started in 2011.  As with most classic flicks, many diehard fans will tell you that the original is better.  However, for younger people, the special effects are obviously better in the rebooted version, but it may lack some of the original plot line.

As with many popular movies, this show has also been turned into a television series, books, comics, and video games.  The first of the TV series aired in 1974 and served as a sequel to the original movies with a total of 14 episodes.  The second of the TV series was an animated spin off and aired the following year with only 13 episodes.  In preparation for the 1999 movie by Fox, a Planet of the Apes video game was made for both PC and Play Station.  However, little success was seen with this game and no more games were seen until this year.  In 2014, Fox partnered with game maker Ndemic Creations to add an update into an existing game, Plauge Inc, which was to take the theme of their latest movie Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The continuing success of this series is undeniable.  Since 21st century took over in 2001, each movie continues to earn more than the last one.  The latest in the series Dawn of the Planet of the Apes received across the board rave reviews from critics, and a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.  Because of this huge success, a new movie which currently remains untitled has been scheduled for release in 2016.

All these years later it’s clear that this movie series has its place in film history.  Both the original and the rebooted series have been warmly received by audiences of all ages.  This iconic film series should be watched in the order it has been released for maximum understanding.  Even for those who are not fans of science fiction, Planet of the Apes is still a must watch.

Even though, I grew up being a fan of the original movie series, I, also, enjoyed the reboot series. Can’t wait for the one after War of the Planet of The Apes. I had the original novel copy, but I finally read the synopsis – It might’ve made a great transition if the film version was as exactly as the classic novel.

I am 64 and was on of the first females that I knew who was into everything science fiction. I fell in love with the first, original one with Charleton Heston. Absolutely love all of them. I now watch them with my grandchildren. Keep them coming.

In 1974, I was with my family at a drive-in somewhere in New Jersey watching a Planet of the Apes marathon for the first 5 movies. I still remember that the place was packed with cars. Of course, as a kid, I only made it through about 3 movies.

Love the reboot. Rarely does the sequel live up to the original, but this is the exception. I hope they can keep it up.
