Underworld Movies In Order
The Underworld movie series is not your typical vampire story. These action packed films have more of a Resident Evil feel to them than your average vampire movie. In fact, there are many parallels including a rough neck female star, a creature vs humans theme, and an “infection” taking over the world theme. Underworld has taken a beating by movie critics, but has continued to perform well in the box office despite the negative reception. In fact, despite the critical ratings, there is a new movie slated for 2015 which will be the 5th in this relatively successful series.
If you’re new to these films, it’s crucial that you watch the Underworld movies in order. The initial release gives a background story to the subsequent movies in the story, and knowing those details is important to understanding the story line. Additionally, Rise of the Lycans which was released in 2009 is a prequel to earlier movies and fills in any missing details about the war between vampires and lycans. Check out the chronological release order above so you don’t start in the middle of the series.
One thing that’s surprising about this series is how little we see of it in popular culture. There was one video game called The Eternal War which was released in 2004 to go along with the initial Underworld release in 2003. Interestingly enough, the game was cancelled in North America before it came out, but was intended for Xbox, PS2, and PCs.

Movie critics have been bashing this series since the original film came out in 2003. In fact, out of the four films that came out so far, the highest Rotten Tomato rating is a 33%. This was earned by the last movie, Awakening, released in 2012. Take those reviews with a grain of salt however, because all together this series raked in almost a half billion dollars at the box office. Because of this box office success, there is another film called Next Generation which is currently in production and scheduled to be released in 2015.
Despite this series negative reviews, I enjoyed it. I liked the female protagonist who has a take nothing from nobody type attitude. I’m obviously not alone either, this film has been consistently making money and earned a spot in the future. Maybe people are sick of the vampire craze which has popped up in the last few years, but I don’t think this movie is a typical vampire movie at all. Whatever your feelings on this series, if you haven’t seen any of them yet one thing is clear: watch them in the proper order!
